Executive Chef Elly Wentworth

Elly Wentworth at the Angel

After working with some exceptional chefs in Michelin Star kitchens, I was at the age of 26 ready to look for an opportunity to take my career as a chef to the next level. When in 2018 I found out that the iconic restaurant the Angel in Dartmouth was looking for a head chef, I knew I had to apply. The owners recognised my innate passion for gastronomy and drive to create great tasting well balanced dishes matched their aspirations for a new era at The Angel. When they offered me the role of Head Chef, it was a memorable day for me and my family.

With an unwavering dedication to the finest seasonal and sustainable ingredients, I have brought to the Angel a modern style of cooking using influences from all over the world. Diners can observe me and the team in action as we work in an open kitchen. It has been a pleasure to meet with many diners who are familiar with the rich history of the restaurant and receive their compliments. It has also been a great pleasure to be recognised by those in the hospitality industry for what we have achieved with a number of awards, as well as 2 AA Rosettes and being included in the prestigious Michelin Guide.

A new legacy!

At The Angel of Dartmouth

At The Angel, we take pride in our commitment to culinary excellence. Led by our talented Executive Chef, Elly Wentworth, a former MasterChef: The Professionals Finalist in 2016 and 3 times Great British Menu competitor for the South West, the kitchen team meticulously crafts each dish to perfection. Elly's dedication to showcasing the finest locally sourced, fresh ingredients ensures that every bite is a celebration of the region's flavours. “James Pike (General Manager) The Holland Group”

In 2016, the Holland Group, a family-owned enterprise overseeing diverse businesses in Dartmouth, including restaurants, holiday apartments, and retail establishments, acquired the building from Clive Jacobs. Their vision unfolded as they transformed the first and second floors into high-quality holiday apartments while reviving the ground floor into a fully operational restaurant, reclaiming its original name, the Angel. Maintaining a commitment to the venue’s tradition of fine dining and aspiring to resurrect the status it enjoyed during Joyce’s era, the Group sought a female chef capable of elevating the restaurant and its reputation.

In the early months of 2018, the 26-year-old chef Elly Wentworth, then working alongside Michelin-starred chef Hywel Jones at Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa, contemplated several enticing career offers. Elly, intrigued by the opportunity at the Angel, discovered it through a friend’s recommendation. After multiple visits, she ultimately embraced the role of head chef, drawn to the unique challenges presented by the Angel and its illustrious history.

Much like Joyce, Elly passionately champions the use of fresh, seasonal, and sustainable produce in her dishes. She collaborates closely with local suppliers who understand her culinary vision. Her modern British cooking, influenced by global flavours, resonates with diners and critics alike.

Mirroring Joyce’s legacy, Elly and her team operate within an open kitchen, allowing diners to witness their culinary craft. Under Elly’s leadership, the Angel has flourished, consistently earning accolades and gaining national attention. Those who cherished dining at the Carved Angel during Joyce’s tenure are returning, expressing delight in seeing another accomplished female chef in the kitchen, delivering exceptional food.
